Trans Films at Outfest
Sat, Jul 11th 2:30pm Redcat Theatre
Against a Trans Narrative - Trans filmmaker Jules Rosskam examines how we reconcile our personal identities with our larger communities in this unique exploration of gender politics. Through interviews, narratives, performances, spoken word, debates and self-reflection, AGAINST A TRANS NARRATIVE challenges communities to consider the depths and diversities of their own identities. As complicated a film as the subject matter it explores, AGAINST A TRANS NARRATIVE will undoubtedly spark further dialogue outside the theater.

Maggots and Men - An experimental narrative set in post-revolutionary Russia, MAGGOTS AND MEN recounts the 1921 Kronstadt sailor uprising with a twist of gender anarchy. Shot on Super 8 and 16mm, this theatrical homage to silent Soviet cinema fantasizes the historical - and homoerotic - relations of the all-male crew with queer and transgender actors from across the masculine spectrum. Beautifully realized, MAGGOTS AND MEN is a celebration and call to arms for radical queers everywhere!

Sat, Jul 11th 7:15pm @ Fairfax 1 & Sat, Jul 18th 1:00pm @ Redcat
Prodigal Sons - Filmmaker Kimberly Reed returns home for her high school reunion, ready to reintroduce herself to the small town as a transgender woman and hoping for reconciliation with her long-estranged adopted brother Marc. Things are complicated by the shocking revelation that Marc may be the grandson of Orson Wells and Rita Hayworth, forcing Kim and her family to explore questions of sexual orientation, identity, severe trauma and love. PRODIGAL SONS offers a raw, provocative and moving examination of one family's struggle to come to terms with its past and present.

Still Black: A Portrait Of Black Transmen - In the award-winning STILL BLACK, first-time feature director Kortney Ziegler gives voice to a frequently marginalized community (even within LGBT circles) - African American transgender men. Coming off a successful screening at Fusion: The Los Angeles LGBT People of Color Film Festival, this consistently engaging film allows six men from around the country to speak for themselves about the complex experience of being black, trans and male in America today.

Thu, Jul 16th 7:15pm Fairfax 1
Two Spirits: Sexuality, Gender, and the Murder of Fred Martinez - Filmmaker Lydia Nibley explores the cultural context behind a tragic and senseless murder. Fred Martinez was a Navajo youth slain at the age of 16 by a man who bragged to his friends that he "bug-smashed a fag." But Fred was part of an honored Navajo tradition - the "nadleeh" or "two-spirit", who possesses a balance of masculine and feminine traits. Through telling Fred's story, Nibley reminds us of the values that America's indigenous peoples have long embraced.

Trans/Giving Film Festival
Trans/Giving’s First Annual Film Festival
Renberg Theater, LA Gay and Lesbian Center
Who are we?
Trans/Giving is a unique, award-winning series that showcases the immense talent of transgender, genderqueer, and intersex artists in Los Angeles and from around the world. Trans/Giving functions as both a showcase for experienced artists as well as a space to explore for those who are new to performing. We are a space where people from many different communities and backgrounds can connect and share their talents. While some of our past artists have addressed gender issues directly, this is by no means a requirement -- we are interested in sharing the best work of all members of our communities, whatever the theme. Trans/Giving believes that the strongest statement we can make as artists is simply through our art.

Butch Voices conference in Oakland, CA
We are Butch Voices
We are woman-identified Butches. We are trans-masculine Studs. We are faggot-identified Aggressives. We are noun Butches, adjective Studs and pronoun-shunning Aggressives. We are she, he, hy, ze, zie and hir. We are you, and we are me. The point is, we don't decide who is Butch, Stud or Aggressive. You get to decide for yourself.
Butch Voices will be holding its first ever multifocal conference and forum for all self-identified Butches, Studs, Aggressives, and other allied identities. We are a group of openminded, gender-bending social justice activists who share a commitment to critical thinking and a common goal of building a powerful, inclusive community for us all.
We invite you to join us for workshops, panels, and performances intended to reflect the diversity and complexity of Butch gender, identity, and action. On the one hand, Butch, Stud, and Aggressive are hyper-visible identities; on the other, our voices too often go unheard or are misunderstood.
We, at Butch Voices, feel it is important to bring together our diverse communities, build bridges, make connections, and use our collective voices to gain better understanding of each other and promote positive visibility.
This conference is an opportunity for us to speak, both to one another and to our allies. To talk about why we identify in the ways we do; about how we can tell our stories when the words available to us simply don't fit; about masculinity and maleness, femininity and femaleness, areas of overlap, and areas of none of the above; about sex and embodiment; about community and about placelessness; about homelessness and about the search for home.
More Info and Please Pass the Word On
For more information check out the Butch Voices website as we will be updating the content with details as they become available.
Feel free to let anyone who you feel might be interested in being a part of this know about us and the event by spreading the word around, cross posting this, or widely forwarding this information along.
